Perhaps one of the simplest ways to live with purpose is to make someone else's day a little better.
What does it actually mean to live with purpose?
Is it having a goal? Something to achieve? A cause we believe in?
Maybe. But I've been thinking that purpose might be found in much smaller, quieter moments.
In simply being kind.
Kindness is such a fundamental part of how we treat one another that we sometimes underestimate its value. And perhaps, because it is such a simple thing, we assume it comes naturally to everyone. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case.
Sometimes kindness begins with noticing.
The woman who always seems cheerful and independent might occasionally wish someone would ask how she's really going.
Some of us are surrounded by family and friends. Others have family interstate or overseas. Some have lost a partner, moved somewhere new or found that friendships change as life moves along.
And often, from the outside, we would never know. How easily do we assume that because someone appears to be managing perfectly well, they don't need anything from us?
Not help, necessarily.
A conversation. An invitation for coffee. A phone call for no particular reason. Or simply remembering to include someone who might otherwise be overlooked.
None of these things requires a grand plan or a special talent. Just a little awareness of the people around us, and having the confidence to take the first step.
Reaching out isn't always easy. We might worry about intruding or making assumptions.
But perhaps we don't have to know someone's circumstances to make them feel welcome.
And what about the ripple?
Something interesting can happen when we make room for another person.
A conversation becomes a friendship. An invitation leads to another invitation. Someone hesitant about joining a group begins to feel they belong.
Maybe the person who reached out discovers something unexpected too.
A new friendship. A different perspective. A connection they didn't realise was missing from their own life.
The kindness travels in both directions.
We don't have to take responsibility for fixing everything. Nor should we assume we know what someone needs.
But we can notice. We can include. We can be kind.
I believe living with purpose isn't always about what we achieve, how busy we are or how much we contribute. It's recognising that the people around us have lives just as complicated, interesting and occasionally difficult as our own.
And that something quite ordinary to us might mean a great deal to someone else.
A small kindness. A moment of connection. A simple invitation.
And perhaps a ripple that travels further than we will ever know.
