When It's Your Turn to Be Celebrated

Women are often very good at celebrating other people.

We organise the birthdays. We attend the weddings. We help our children through their milestones. We cheer on our partners. We show up for friends.

And then, sometimes, something changes.

The invitation arrives.

The award is being presented. The retirement celebration is being planned. A significant birthday is approaching.

And suddenly, you're the one being celebrated.

It can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. Not because you don't appreciate it.

But because you've spent so much of your life being the person standing beside someone else.

Now the attention is on you. And with that can come a different question:

"What am I going to wear?"

But perhaps the real question is:

"How do I want to feel when I walk into the room?"

Because these occasions aren't about proving anything.

A milestone birthday isn't a test of how young you can look.

Retirement is definitely not the end of your relevance.

An award isn't an opportunity to become someone you're not.

These moments are an opportunity to acknowledge something you've achieved, experienced or contributed. You have earned your place in that room.

And you don't need to dress like a younger version of yourself to deserve it. You don't need to follow every trend. You don't need to choose something that makes everyone else notice you. You simply need to choose something that makes you feel confident, comfortable and completely yourself.

Perhaps that's one of the strange things about getting older.

We become much clearer about who we are. We know what we like. We know what we're comfortable in. We know what matters to us.

And yet, when the spotlight turns our way, we can sometimes forget all of that.

We start wondering what everyone else will think.

Perhaps it's time to stop. Because there are moments in life when it is perfectly acceptable to step forward.

To accept the congratulations. To enjoy the compliments. To have your photograph taken. To raise a glass. To celebrate what you've achieved.

Without apologising for taking up a little space.

Whether it's your 50th, 60th or 70th birthday.

Your retirement after decades of work.

An award recognising something you've contributed.

Or simply a milestone that matters deeply to you.

Your celebration deserves to feel like you. Not who you were twenty years ago. Not who someone else thinks you should be. You, now.

And perhaps that is the greatest confidence of all.

To allow yourself to be seen. To accept that this moment matters.

And to enjoy being the woman everyone has come to celebrate.

Because sometimes...

It is your turn.

And you don't need to audition.

You arrive.
