  • Sustainability : The important question facing us in the 21st Century

Softly Flowing White to Pink to Dark Salmon Maxi Length Lined Dress and Matching Jacket. Side View.

Hiring an outfit instead of buying comes with significant sustainability benefits as it remains incumbent on us all to act environmentally responsible. Hiring an outfit  offers a valuable and viable alternative.

Outlined here are some of the key reasons:

    1. Reduced resource consumption:

Hiring outfit eliminates the need to extract raw materials, manufacture new garments, and transport them nationally and internationally, significantly reducing the overall resource footprint.

    1. Water and energy usage:

Garment production requires a lot of water and energy.   By opting to rent, you're contributing less to this burden.

    1. Combating fast fashion:

Rental platforms extend the life cycle of existing clothing and keeps them in circulation longer, giving them a second (or third) life and preventing them from ending up in landfills prematurely.

    1. Reduces overconsumption

The "buy once, wear once" culture of fast fashion contributes heavily to textile waste.  Hiring encourages a more mindful approach to clothing and reduces impulse purchases and prevents the problem of having a wardrobe over-filled with garments that are unlikely to be worn again.

    1. Encouraging circular economy:

By participating in the shared economy, rental platforms promote a model where resources are utilised efficiently, minimising waste and maximising use.

    1. Repair and refurbishment:

While garments remain in new or near new condition, rental companies often have the skill and resources to undertake minor repair work.  However, garments with obvious wear and damage may be refurbished and donated to charity clothing organisations further extending their lifespan, minimising waste, and providing a much needed resource for these organisations.

    Additional benefits:

    • Less textile waste: As previously mentioned, renting helps prevent clothing from ending up in landfills, contributing to a cleaner environment.
    • Lower carbon footprint: By reducing production, transportation, and disposal, renting has a lower carbon footprint compared to buying new clothes.

    However, it's important to remember:

    • Not all clothing hire platforms are created equal:   Choose companies with sustainable practices like using recycled materials, eco-friendly packaging, and responsible disposal methods.
    • Transportation emissions: Factor in the carbon footprint of delivery and return shipping, especially if renting from faraway locations.

Overall, hiring an outfit for a special occasion can be a great way to enjoy fashion while minimising your environmental impact.  By making informed choices and considering the lifecycle of the garments, you can contribute to a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.
