What Should A Grandmother Wear to a Wedding?

We talk a lot about what the Mother of the Bride should wear. And the Mother of the Groom.

But what about the grandmothers?

Grandmothers are an important part of the wedding too. They have watched their granddaughter or grandson grow from a childhood into the adult they are now and about to walk down the aisle.

It's a very special occasion, and she wants to look and feel fabulous.

But where does she start?

Does being a grandmother mean dressing a certain way? Absolutely not.

There's no rule that says grandmothers must wear muted colours, sensible jackets or something that quietly blends into the background.

Some women love a beautifully tailored dress and jacket. Others prefer flowing chiffon, elegant silk, a little sparkle, or even a sophisticated trouser suit.

The important thing is finding something that feels like you.

What about length, sleeves and colour?

Start with the wedding itself.

Is it a formal evening celebration, a garden wedding or a relaxed afternoon gathering?

A midi dress can be a lovely choice, but so can a full-length gown for a formal occasion.

Sleeves are entirely a matter of preference. For those of us looking for a upper arm coverage, there are beautiful options that don't mean sacrificing elegance.

And colour?  Unless the couple has requested a particular dress code, there's plenty of room to choose something you love. It's always thoughtful to check whether the bridal party has a colour scheme, particularly if you're appearing in family photographs.

And perhaps the most important question — will I be comfortable?

Weddings can be long days. There may be photographs, walking, sitting, standing, dancing and plenty of catching up with family.

Choose something you can move in, sit comfortably in and enjoy wearing for hours. Beautiful doesn't have to mean uncomfortable.

Do I need to buy something new?

Not necessarily.

Hiring can be a wonderful alternative, particularly when you'd love to wear something special without investing in an outfit you may only wear once.

And there's no reason you can't wear something you already own and love. Because here's the thing.

Being a grandmother is a wonderful part of your life. But it doesn't define your style, your personality or how fabulous you deserve to feel.

This is a family celebration, and you belong right at the heart of it.
